Lake Kerferd via the Indigo Epic Trail

Surface: Singletrack and fire roads

Gradient: Mostly flat with some steeper sections

Fitness level: Most people in good health

Trail difficulty rating: Easy (green)

Great for inexperienced riders

The Indigo Epic is an intermediate-standard mountain bike trail flowing for over 50km through native forest, historic sites and farmland between the High Country towns of Beechworth and Yackandandah.

This 6km section of the trail between the Old Beechworth Gaol and Lake Kerferd is an excellent introduction to the Indigo Epic for families and beginner mountain bikers.

We rate it as Easy (green) with one or two More Difficult (blue) sections. Check out what this means. The ride is slightly uphill going out and downhill coming back.

How to enjoy it

You can ride it on your own bike, but we think the best way to enjoy this adventure is on one of our E-MTBs, with a snack and some water packed to tuck into once you reach Lake Kerferd.

You'll love the adventure of riding a mix of smooth, machine-cut trail and rougher old forest fireroads as you weave your way between the two lakes. There are one or two trickier sections to conquer ... all part of the fun!

Along the way you might encounter koalas, wallabies, goannas or an echidna, and the trail's twists and turns will keep you on your toes as you ride alongside Silver Creek and through the Beechworth Historic Park.

Don't stray too far from the trail, the surrounding bushland was a bustling gold mining site back in the 19th century and many of the deep, original mineshafts are still present!
